Nintendo makes a record-breaking first-quarter profit owing to Zelda and the Mario film.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and The Super Mario Bros. Movie sales helped Nintendo post its best first-quarter profit ever. 

Those two properties have remarkable numbers. The Super Mario Bros. 

Movie grossed $1.349 billion worldwide as of July 26, the highest for an original video game film and the second-highest for an animated picture. 

168.10 million people watched it. Nintendo's "mobile and IP-related income" increased 190 percent year-over-year.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold 18.51 million copies since May, while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 1.67 million last quarter. 

"Sell-through of this one title [Zelda] constitutes approximately half of the first-party software sold this fiscal year," Nintendo added.

Switch sales rose to 3.91 million in the last quarter from 3.43 million last year, with 2.83 million being the more expensive OLED variant. 

Zelda-related console purchases may have contributed to that spike.
